Chief of Pediatric Cardiology

Cardiology Section Chief

Chief, Pediatric Cardiology

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Chief for the Section of Pediatric Cardiology. Potential applicants should hold an M.D. degree and board certification in Pediatric Cardiology.  Candidates should qualify for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level. Candidates for this position should have strong clinical and academic leadership skills.  The successful candidate will assume clinical, academic, and administrative responsibilities and provide leadership by promoting faculty development, teaching students, residents, and fellows and supporting the department's four-fold mission - to teach, to heal, to search, and to serve.

The Section of Pediatric Cardiology is comprised of 20 faculty members including 15 pediatric cardiologists and 5 pediatric cardiac intensivists.  The section is part of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Heart Center and works closely with our Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery and Cardiac Anesthesia teams. Arkansas Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital for the State of Arkansas.  The cardiology section provides care for Arkansas and surrounding states with a total referral base of approximately 4 million. The outpatient cardiology service is large and included 9000 outpatient visits and interpretation of 10,000 echocardiograms in 2010.  Approximately 550 cardiac catheterizations were performed per year in two new biplane catheterization laboratories.  Post-operative care was provided for approximately 280 cardiopulmonary bypass procedures and a total 600 cardiac surgical procedures in a 15 bed cardiac intensive care unit contiguous with 16 bed step-down telemetry unit.   The heart failure and transplant program at Arkansas Children’s Hospital is one of the largest in the nation.  This, in addition to active programs in interventional catheterization, fetal echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and electrophysiology provides an excellent clinical training environment for 6 pediatric cardiology fellows.   A new 18,000 square foot addition to the current 16,000 square foot cardiac intensive care unit is due to open in Dec 2012. This expansion will also include addition of clinic and echocardiography space.

Research in the Cardiology Section is strong with active NIH and other extramural funding.  The Cardiology Section participates in the Center for Translational Science at UAMS and other collaborators in the Department of Pediatrics.  The Cardiology Section has a strong track record for publication and leadership in academic pediatric cardiology.

The UAMS Department of Pediatrics is the largest department in the UAMS College of Medicine with over 230 faculty members and more than 100 residents and fellows.  Arkansas Children’s Hospital is among the ten largest children’s hospitals in the United States and was ranked among the nation’s best places to work by FORTUNE for the past three years.  Located in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, Little Rock is an exceptionally family-oriented community combining
